What is Vocation
How do I know whether I have vocation or not…? How often we hear this question from the lips of many young people who have come to realize that life has a purpose. Most times they silence or put aside this idea and say to themselves, “I am sure I have no vocation”. How little they know the happiness they are throwing away in turning from God’s invitation for such a question. A feeling is often a sign of a genuine vocation.
A vocation is not a mysterious idea as some people imagine it to be but it is simply a choice God makes of one for a certain kind of life.
The word vocation has its root in the Latin “vocare” which means to call. One is created not to live in isolation but to live and share life with people. In responding to one’s vocation one must be in relation with others. God has called us to life and he wants us to do something for him. He also extends his invitation and called us to Christian life so as to do something more in this life. Through the virtue of our baptism he calls us to serve him in the different vocations we have in the church.
A vocation implies a call; if God calls you it is because he wants something from you. God however works in different ways and each one of us can take part in God’s work through the life style that we have chosen to live, such as: married life, single life, religious life and priestly life. These types of vocations must be lived in a very concrete way and be chosen for the sake of the kingdom of God which is for the benefit of our brothers and sisters.
A true Vocation
A person is known to have a true vocation to enter a particular call in life if she or he feels sincerely convinced and able to judge with God’s grace his or her capabilities. So that through one’s career or lifestyle one is able to attain the end for which God places him or her on earth. A person’s habit, talents and situations of life should be fitting to one’s choice of vocation. A fair prospect of succeeding is the spirit needed in settling for any vocation.
In order to judge whether we have a vocation or not, that is inspired by God. It is not usually sufficient to satisfy ourselves that we have a persisted attraction for it. This work is not certain unless a natural condition is fulfilled namely: physical, moral and intellectual qualities.
A vocation to the religious state supposes then not only a supernatural inclination or desire to embrace it but an attitude or fitness for its duties.
If you wish, come and follow me...!
A firm, constant will and desire to serve the Lord in the manner and the place to which he calls you is very important in every vocation.
